THE PROGRAMS:

The chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society and offers programs of study leading to certified and non-certified bachelor of science degrees in chemistry, as well as a bachelor of science in chemistry with teacher certification. A minor concentration in chemistry is also offered.

The Physics Division of the Chemistry and Physics Department supports the College of Arts and Sciences of Armstrong Atlantic State University by teaching heavy loads of support courses in introductory physics (a two-semester trigonometry based lab sequence), principles of physics (a two-semester calculus based lab sequence), physical science, and astronomy. The department offers a course of study leading to a bachelor of science in applied physics, currently with 15 majors. Minor concentrations in applied physics and physical science are also offered.

While not offering a pre-med major, AASU has active pre-medical and post baccalaureate programs. Each year graduates receive admission to some of the finest medical schools in the country, with an acceptance rate of over 60%. Feedback from this group indicates that the AASU experience provided them with the tools necessary for the rigors of medical school.

The department supports a strong pre-pharmacy program serving approximately eighty students per year. Students who complete this program have a record of success in pharmacy school.

The department provides service courses in the areas of meteorology, geology and oceanography.

A Certificate in Forensic Science is offered to those who take a course of study in chemistry, biology and criminal justice. This certificate is among many offered by the University.

The Department supports an active student affiliate of the American Chemical Society that provides career information, peer support and a social outlet for interested students. The Student Affiliate chapter has a long been recognized as an outstanding or commendable chapter by the national Society.
